Weekly Trivia: "Computer says no"...On Friday, why did millions of computers not turn on? Answer.

The boss, Michael Chidzey, hijacks The Signal editor’s office this week. Cue compulsory coffee breaks, lots of bad SEO jokes, and photos of Miles (his dog).

Hello, happy Tequila Day, and welcome to this edition of The Signal. Joyce is taking a well-deserved break, so I’m slipping into the editor’s chair and picking this week’s Top Picks. I didn’t have to do much because so many fascinating articles and posts were published by smart and generous people from across our industry. If you like what they’ve published, please go and follow them on all social media platforms…maybe not the really personal ones…you know the ones I mean!

I love The Signal. It’s one of my favourite activities that we do here at Good Signals. Each week, it keeps me up-to-date with what’s going on in our industry and across the wider web. It’s made by a super-talented, super-likeable bunch of people who read hundreds of articles and select the ‘best of’ to keep you informed. And now, with its new editor in place, there’s nothing we can’t do! [He’s kidding. Don’t worry, Joyce is back next week!]

Joking aside, this weekly email is a passion project of ours. It’s ad-free, and there’s no paying to feature or anything like that. We’re not focused on subscriber count or list growth. Our goals are simple: to have people actually read and enjoy The Signal, not just subscribe, and to make it one of your favourite newsletters. We’ve received amazingly useful feedback so far, but please always reply directly to this email with suggestions on how we can make The Signal even better for you.

Before we get to our top picks, here are some other updates from this week: Google reverses its decision on third-party cookies, Meta introduces AI-generated photos to all platforms, and Google tests a save button for AI overviews, larger site names and favicons, and Knowledge Panels using AI-generated images. Additionally, Bing is testing related searches at the top, below the search bar. Plus, user satisfaction with Google grows in 2024.
